Erasing the Eradicated

Eraser (1996): XP

(Spoiler Warning)

Overall Thoughts

With great movies comes lesser admired ones; I am just glad that there weren't any sequels of this. Hats off to our former politician bodybuilder for the cat-like ninja skills displayed within the first scenes of the movie. It is interesting to see that directors still wanted to see Arnold wield powerful weapons after Terminators 1 & 2. Moreover, very ironic how the former robot assassin is now protecting targets with a new catch phrase, "You've just been erased" (in the iconic Austrian accent). Before watching the film and discovering it was corny as it was humorous, I saw my father had a disc of it and thought: "It must be interesting". Boy was I in for a wild roller coaster. I had a blast watching victims being blown drastically from different firearms. In the book, "Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics", I've read and it easily disproves the probability of high caliber weapons (shotguns and rail guns) carrying individuals to great distances with such ferocity. It also counters the misalignment of the two scoped assassins versus John Kruger holding two rail guns at the hip firing with blaze. I witnessed the same occurrences in the plane scene within different movies. I guess the suspense was inspiring in a lot of action thrillers yet I wondered the percentage of survivability when opening a parachute from that height. In honesty, some parts and conversations were not well developed and thought out. Such as why were there so many agitated alligators all in one tank, how did the window suck in a lot air when the boss shot himself, etc. There were a lot of insignificant characters thrown at us at different parts that got "erased" pretty quickly without any buildup or backstory (i.e. Lee's ex, WitSec rookie, Lee's news reporter friend, basically anyone who cares about the main characters). But hey, he acquired a useful sidekick that would conveniently know someone/get something that would easily fix the situation. All I'm saying is if you have a big enough budget, then you should construct better plot without lazy writing and not focus it all on computer-generated imagery. It was another over-the-top cliche movie with a catastrophic causing weapon being sold to a foreign enemy by a mole in an agency. Other than complaining, it's a good movie...for a good laugh. The time era could explain the settings of some scenes such as the exaggerated gay club, flip phones, Russians (always the Russians), and New York mafias. I chose to analyze final fight scene, parachute scene, and the rail gun scene.

Scene 1: Parachute Scene

During this scene we see that John Kruger is pitted in a dangerous corner in a plane full of traitorous enemies (mainly minions working for a single boss). With no way out of the unpredictable scenario plus the back and forth shooting, it leaves John to expose the plane and take the plane down along with the WitSec scumbags. Thankfully he finds a few parachutes to grab one before breaking one of turbine engines. He accidentally lets go of the chute and aims to grab in the middle of the free fall. With a mere few minutes left before the required height to deploy the parachute he gets it out on time. However, the maniacal US Marshal insist on wiping him out like a bug. The plane goes after him, it avoids him and now he is entangled from the cords of the chute... What shall he do? I am just more curious at where they landed the huge aircraft without question from other organizations. He deploys a second chute which barely saved his life.
What was his final velocity coming down? Could a person survive from this fall?
  • Yi = 600 meters
  • Yf = 3 meters
  • Vy, i = -279 m/s
  • Vy, f = -298 m/s
  • Ay = -9.8 m/s^2
  • t = 2 seconds

Scene 2: Ending Fight/Drop Scene

The ending scene depicts John Kruger, Lee, and James Caan standing on the top of a shipping container full of rail guns. Brutal fighting occurs between men while Lee hangs on for dear life. The corrupt US Marshal gains an advantage inflicting physical pain on the wounded protagonist with a crowbar. To gain more suspense, the platform tilts (I don't know how if it wasn't going that fast)  chaotically as John endures all the pain (still going strong) as Cullen attempts to grab the pistol to end the conflict. One second later, she slides off like a kid on a water slide. Coincidentally Arnold's sleeves were blown away so that he could save her with his guns and help her up. US Marshal Robert finally reached the handgun and instead of shooting, waits to see what John would do. The eraser breaks the gear that held the container and brought all the men that were standing on it.
At what height did they fall from?
  • Yi = 122.5 meters
  • Yf = 0 meters
  • Vy, i = 0 m/s
  • Vy, f = -49 m/s
  • Ay = -9.8 m/s^2
  • t = 5 seconds

Scene 3: Rail gun Scene

This scene was one of my favorites throughout the whole movie, for many reasons. I like how to main star of the movie has a sixth sense and has the ability to dodge near light speed aluminum bullets while the enemies are picked off fairly easy. On the other hand, John only sustains minimum damage and is walking fine the next morning with the help of movie magic. The third scene opens up with Lee's ex barging in and taking a shower without context meeting his doom at that hour. That's why you should never go back. It is flawed how the rail gun's x-ray light does not penetrate through the house wall and they can't see it. In the Baltimore docks fight scene the light penetrates the warehouse wall with no problem. The hired assassins are hidden in the bushes as one scopes in the victims vital organs. I'd say just shoot anywhere on the victims torso since it would just obliterate the person being hit. Interrupted by Arnold's van they stopped and waited for him to grab Lee Cullen before shooting violently onto her ex. He flew back viciously towards the other end of the house.

What was his momentum when he got shot?

  • pi = pf
  • Mass 1 (Lee's ex) = 70 kg
  • Vi, 1 = 0 m/s
  • Vf, 1 = 57,142.86 m/s
  • Mass 2 (aluminum bullet) = 0.02 kg
  • Vi, 2 = 200,000,000 m/s
  • Vi, f = 0 m/s

Which would mean the assassin's entire shoulder should also be blasted off after firing once.

Gun, Weapon, Machine Gun, Pilot, Target

  1. OK, you seem to have redone the first homework assignment for the second movie. The assignment for this movie was just to analyze one of the scenes of someone firing the railgun and apply conservation of momentum to that scene. So, while I like the scenes you analyzed and the questions you asked, you fell short in your application of conservation of momentum.
